Broncos guard Quinn Meinerz turns down Pro Bowl invitation

Broncos guard Quinn Meinerz made first-team All-Pro this season, but he won’t be participating in the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl Games.
Meinerz was a first AFC alternate at guard for the Pro Bowl. However, he turned down an invitation extended Monday after Kansas City guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith pulled out of the event later this week in Orlando, Fla., due to the Chiefs making the Super Bowl. Thuney was named as a starter and Smith a reserve.
“He doesn’t want to be a replacement,” a source said about Meinerz, a four-year veteran.
Meinerz would have been in line to replace Thuney in the starting lineup had he accepted the invitation. After he declined, Cleveland’s Joel Bitonio was chosen to replace Thuney. The other starter that had been named, Quenton Nelson of Indianapolis, remains in the Pro Bowl Games, which run Thursday through Sunday.
Meinerz could have been the Broncos’ fourth Pro Bowl selection during a 10-7 campaign in which they made the playoffs for the first time since 2015 and had their first winning season since 2016. Named earlier this month as AFC Pro Bowl starters were cornerback Pat Surtain II, outside linebacker Nik Bonitto and kick returner Marvin Mims Jr.
