Part of Colorado could get up to 18 inches of snow over upcoming days

There’s not a lot of snow in the forecast for Colorado over the next few days, but the snow that’s expected to fall is set to favor the part of the state that needs it most.

Mapping from the National Weather Service shows that up to 18 inches of snow could fall on some of the state’s peaks through Wednesday morning – but also that the incoming snow will fall entirely in southwestern Colorado.

Southwestern Colorado snowpack currently sits at just 69 percent of the norm for this point in the season, compared to 89 percent at the statewide level. In other words, while much of the state is close to the typical snowpack for the date, southwestern Colorado (along with southern Colorado) is lagging quite a bit behind and bringing the statewide comparison-to-norm down with it.

Without further ado, here’s a look at snowfall mapping provided by the National Weather Service – two scenarios are depicted, a more likely ‘expected’ scenario, as well as a ‘high-end’ scenario:

‘High-end’ snow forecast (10% chance):

The OpenSnow forecast for the state’s resorts shows just how isolated this snowfall is expected to be. While southwestern Colorado spots like Hesperus, Purgatory, and Wolf Creek should get six to seven inches over the next five days, central mountain spots get no snow to a couple inches if they’re lucky.

It’s also worth noting that National Weather Service mapping indicates that heavy snow could hit the northern half of the state from February 1 through 7. Read more about that here.
