The El Paso County Coroner’s Office on Monday released the identity of the spectator who died Sunday during an indoor track and field meet at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
Wade Langston, 57, died after he was struck by an object during a weight throwing event at a club sports track and field meet for high school students and younger across Colorado. The incident took place at about 9:30 a.m. at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.
Family member Tamara Rocha released a statement on behalf of Langston’s family:
“Wade was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished brother and brother-in-law, fun uncle, and an even more fun great-uncle. He was a truly wonderful person who brought laughter to every room he entered with his great sense of humor. There are no words to express the depth of our sorrow, but we are clinging tightly to the memories, laughter and love that we shared with Wade. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support but ask for privacy as we process this profound grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with all others impacted by this tragedy.”
A news release from UCCS stated that the man was struck by a thrown “hammer” that had “cleared certified barriers.” The meet schedule listed a “weight throw,” which is typical for indoor events.
A track-and-field hammer is a metal ball, attached to a handle by a length of wire, that is thrown for distance. The indoor weight is typically heavier, with a shorter tether.
The meet was put on by the Colorado United Track Club, according to an event post online. The club has three meets at the UCCS facility listed on its schedule, with the last one Feb. 16. Athletes as young as 12 years old are allowed to compete.
Rescue crews from the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded and provided medical care, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, the release stated.
“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in a statement Sunday.
