1,000s of Coloradans have ‘unclaimed property’ held by the state – here’s how to get it
Many people aren’t aware that unclaimed money and other assets are held by the state until the rightful owner requests it. This can include money related to a variety of assets – lawsuit payouts, stocks and dividends, mutual funds, checking and savings accounts, unpaid wages, securities, life insurance payouts, uncashed checks… the list goes on.
According to the State of Colorado, the organization that holds the original obligation is required to make an effort to get those assets back to their rightful owners, but sometimes, they’re not able to make contact. At that point, the property becomes the custody of the state and the rightful owner is still able to make a simple claim to get that property back.
A report from KDVR notes that the amount of unclaimed property the state holds is no small amount – $2.06 billion in total. Thankfully, the state has a website that makes it relatively easy to get this property back, and that process starts with a simple search.
Find that website here. You might be surprised by what you can claim, and even if it’s only a few bucks, money is money.
