Colorado zoo in the running for ‘best zoo in US’ vote
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has once again been nominated as the ‘best zoo’ in the country as part of USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
At time of publishing, the zoo was in third place on the leaderboard of 20 nominees from around the US. Readers can vote once per day until voting closes on March 10 at noon. A ‘top 10’ will be announced on March 19.
This is the ninth consecutive year the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has been nominated for this award.
Located in Colorado Springs, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is home to hundreds of animals representing “a vast array of species from all corners of the globe.” According to USA Today, the African Rift Valley exhibit is home to one of the largest zoo giraffe herds in North America, as well as red river hogs, meerkats, African lions, and colobus monkeys. The Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit connects visitors with some of the Rocky Mountain region’s natural wildlife, including mountain lions, Alaska moose, Canada lynx, grizzly bears, and river otters.
Visitors can also hand-feed giraffes or take in the exhibits and surrounding area from the Mountaineer Sky Ride, a chairlift-style, open-air ride.

“Anyone who has made eye contact with a tiger, pet a wallaby, felt the roar of an African lion, hand-fed a giraffe or walked alongside an African penguin knows how special our hometown Zoo is,” reads the zoo’s press release. “This friendly competition amongst zoos nationwide is an excellent way to show your support.”
