Wheat Ridge police recommended a suspect be charged with vehicular homicide after a fatal crash that killed one driver and injured a passenger.
Officers arrested 54-year-old John David Bormolini after a crash at the intersection of West 44th Avenue and Kipling Street on Dec. 23, according to a news release from the police department.
After investigations, the department recommended that the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office charge the man with a count of vehicular homicide and a count of vehicular assault Friday, according to the release.
Based on witness statements and surveillance footage, a red Ram 1500 was stopped at a red light for northbound traffic at the intersection, waiting to turn left onto West 44th Avenue, when Bormolini, driving a black Toyota Tundra, was traveling northbound on Kipling Street at a “high rate of speed,” according to the release.
Bormolini then rear-ended the truck. The driver of the Ram was pronounced dead on scene and a passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but survived.
Other surveillance footage found that Bormolini was driving “erratically and recklessly” around multiple cars along Kipling Street as far back as West 38th Avenue, police said. He also ran a red light at West 40th Avenue and was traveling at least 78 mph at the time of impact in a 40 mph zone.
Bormolini was issued a $75,000 cash bond.
The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination on the potential filing of any charges.
