Broncos rank No. 17 in NFLPA team report card; ownership gets an ‘A,’ locker room an ‘F’

INDIANAPOLIS • Broncos players really like their ownership.

As for their locker room, not so much.

For the annual NFL Players Association team report cards, which were released Wednesday, the Broncos came in No. 17 out of 32 teams. They got an “A” for the Walton-Penner family ownership group and in team travel but an “F” for their locker room at Broncos Park.

However, the survey results did note the Broncos are building a “state-of-the-art practice facility,” which will open in 2026. The locker room will be much bigger and more up to date.

Still, the Broncos did drop from a No. 16 ranking last year in the results, based upon anonymous voting by players on each team. The NFLPA reported that 1,695 players participated, 77% of their membership.

The Broncos, who have officials at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, did not offer a comment on the survey.

The Broncos ranked fourth in team ownership. The only other teams that have had ownership rank in the top five in each of the three years of the survey are Miami and Minnesota. The Dolphins ranked as the top team overall in the survey while the Vikings were No. 2.

The report said the Walton-Penner ownership group got high marks for a “willingness to invest in the facilities” and that owners are “extremely committed to building a competitive team.” In the third season of the Walton-Penner ownership, the Broncos went 10-7 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

The Broncos got an A- in the nutritionist/dietitian category. They received a B+ in the food/dining area and training staff categories, and a B in the training room, weight room and head coach categories. But Sean Payton was ranked just No. 26 among all NFL head coaches.

According to the report, “80% of Broncos players feel their head coach Sean Payton is efficient with their time” and “the players feel that Payton is moderately receptive to locker room feedback on the team’s needs.”

The Broncos got a B- in strength coaches and a C- in treatment of families. For treatment of families, it was written that the “players would like the post-game family area to be indoors.” However, the Broncos do have an indoor family area that opened last season.

By far the lowest grade the Broncos got was for their cramped locker room. It was reported that “56% of players feel they have enough room in their individual lockers, a ranking of 29 out of 32.” And it was reported that “42% of players feel the locker room size is adequate, ranking the Broncos 30 out of 32 teams.”

At least Denver’s locker-room grade figures to go way up once the new practice facility opens.
