‘Wicked’ star Cynthia Erivo to speak at CU Boulder conference

Cynthia Erivo

“Wicked” star Cynthia Erivio is coming to University of Colorado Boulder where she will toss, toss a few important ideas at an annual conference.

Erivo — the Emmy, Grammy and Tony-award winner and three-time Oscar nominee — will join Stefanie K. Johnson, the director of CU Boulder’s Center for Leadership, in a keynote discussion during the college’s 77th annual Conference on World Affairs between April 7-11. CU’s press release did not specify exactly when she would speak.

The discussion will span Erivo’s life journey and her experience of being a woman in the arts industry, according to the release.

Erivo started her bursting career in London’s West End and Broadway stages in “The Color Purple.” Since, she starred as Elphaba in Universal Studios’ 2024 hit musical “Wicked,” which has earned more than $728 million worldwide as of Feb. 28, 2025.

For her role in the prequel musical to “The Wizard of Oz,” Erivo was nominated for an Academy Award in addition to receiving Screen Actors Guild, British Academy of Film and Television Award, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Award nominations.

The conference won’t be Erivo’s only time in Colorado this year. It was previously announced that Ervio will headline the Colorado Symphony’s 2025 gala benefit concert on May 10 at Boettcher Concert Hall as part of its largest annual fundraising event. Tickets on sale at coloradosymphony.org.

Erivo’s journey to stardom sits directly in the conference’s 2025 theme of “lead, innovate and impact,” according to the release. Fifty-three thought leaders and experts across eight categories — including arts, business, technology and science — will host various discussions about today’s “top issues.”

The conference is free and offers some sessions in-person and some livestreamed. The Erivo talk will not be livestreamed, the college said.

Registration for Erivo’s appearance opens the week of March 17. Registration and a list of speakers can be found at CU Boulder’s website.

It had to feel a little like, I don’t know, crossing an illegal border. Imagine, after all the craziness of the past two months, traveling from Colorado to Washington D.C. right now to advocate for the value of the arts and continued arts funding. “In some ways, it was business as usual – and in other […]
