An engine aboard an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 passenger jet burst into flames shortly after landing at Denver International Airport on Thursday.
The AAL1006 pilot reported engine vibrations shortly after the plane departed from Colorado Springs.
This is not the first instance of engine-related issues linked to the Seattle-based manufacturer’s popular twin-engine passenger plane.
On April 7, 2024, a Southwest Airlines 737-800 bound for Houston returned to Denver after its engine cowling fell off during takeoff.
Passengers described the ordeal as “frightening,” Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC-TV reported.
In June of 2024, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-800 departing Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was forced to return “due to an issue with one of the engines during climb after takeoff, ”The Times of India reported.
Qantas Airlines Flight 520 suffered an engine failure on takeoff on Nov. 8, 2024. Parts of the engine fan blades were ejected from the engine, according to Aviation Safety Network, a publication of the Flight Safety Foundation.
A 737-800 operated by Sun Country Airlines departed Phoenix for Minneapolis on Nov. 26, 2024, but returned to the airport shortly after departure after experiencing “an engine event.”
An airline statement said passengers were deplaned and returned to Minneapolis on a new aircraft.
Also in 2024, United Airlines evacuated 162 passengers from one of its Boeing 737-800s at Boston’s Logan Airport after the crew reported engine issues.
Engine fires are rare, and crews are trained to deal with them, aviation expert Steven Wallace said. They typically are not catastrophic even if they occur in the air because planes can fly with a single engine, he said.
“A pilot going to work for an airline today could likely fly for 30 years and never experience an engine failure,” said Wallace, a former director of the FAA’s accident investigations office.
Boeing has been under intense scrutiny after several incidents placed a spotlight on the company, raising questions about quality control in production.
