A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide after fatally crashing into a pedestrian and his dog in Highlands Ranch on Sunday, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
In a Monday news release, sheriff’s officials said Cade Kaminski, 19, will face charges of fourth-degree felony vehicular homicide and animal abuse, alleging he may have fallen asleep before the crash.
The crash, which was called in at 2:54 p.m. Sunday, happened along southbound Kendrick Castillo Way at Mayberry Drive, according to the sheriff’s office.
There, a 31-year-old man and his dog were walking southbound on the sidewalk when they were struck by the car, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said the man died at the scene after a car struck him and his dog died later at a veterinarian’s office.
The driver remained on-scene, according to officials.
Preliminary investigation show “it appears that the driver may have fallen asleep” before striking the man and his dog, sheriff’s office officials said.
Along with vehicular homicide and animal abuse, Kaminski might face charges of reckless driving and weaving.
Kaminski is being held on $20,000 bond, according to the sheriff’s office.
He’s due in court Thursday to be advised of the charges against him.
