Westbound I-70 re-opens at Copper Mountain after semitruck crash
A crash between two semitrucks closed a section of westbound Interstate 70 for hours Friday morning as skiers headed west for the weekend snow.
Two commercial vehicles crashed on the highway near Copper Mountain around 6 a.m. Friday morning, according to a press release from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
I-70 re-opened by about 9:30 a.m., according to CDOT.
The two trucks slid on ice and crashed into concrete jersey barriers on I-70, rupturing one of the truck’s fuel tank. An estimated 65 gallons of diesel spilled from the tank onto the road, according to CDOT. The spill will require hazardous cleanup, causing the road to close.
The closure was between Copper Mountain (Exit 195) and Eagle (Exit 169).
Westbound traffic was detoured to take Colorado Highway 91 toward Leadville, then U.S. Route 24 to rejoin westbound I-70 on the other side of the closure.
