Two arrested on charges of killing Greeley man, setting body on fire

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office arrested two suspects in connection with killing a man and setting his body on fire in Poudre Canyon.

Isaac Valdez-Salvador, 32, of Fort Collins and Juana Espino, 37, of Evans were booked into the Weld County Jail on charges related to the death of Gerardo Hernandez Lucio, 49, of Greeley. They could face charges of first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and, in the case of Valdez-Salvador, motor vehicle theft, according to news releases from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

Police were first alerted of the incident just before 5 a.m. on April 11, when dispatch received a report of a fire under the bridge at Stevens Gulch Picnic Area, according to the release. The Poudre Canyon Volunteer Fire Department responded to the incident and found a dead body on fire.

After conducting the autopsy, the coroner identified the body as Lucio’s and determined the cause of death to be a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head, according to the coroner’s office release.

After conducting an initial investigation, police identified Valdez-Salvador as the murder suspect and Espino as a co-conspirator in the gun purchase and killing, adding that the two people were associated with one another.

Police initiated a traffic stop for Valdez-Salvador in Loveland on April 14, but he drove away at speeds exceeding 100 mph, according to the sheriff’s office release. Then, after stopping due to a flat tire, Valdez-Salvador exited his vehicle and allegedly ran across the interstate with a handgun, only to get hit by an oncoming vehicle in the northbound lane of State Highway 34. He was transported to a hospital with serious injuries that he is now recovering from.

Police believe that Lucio was killed in Weld County several days before his body was set on fire, and so the case will be prosecuted by the 19th Judicial District Attorney.

Anyone with information about the suspects or incident should contact Investigator Ryan Gebhardt with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office at (970) 498-5586. Those who want to remain anonymous can also contact Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868 or www.stopcriminals.org.
