Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter selected by Jaguars with No. 2 overall pick in NFL draft

Travis Hunter made Colorado history one last time.

After being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, Hunter joined Matthews (No. 2 overall to the San Diego Chargers in 1974) as the only Buffaloes players to be drafted that high.

Hunter was announced as a wide receiver/defensive back by the Jaguars, who traded up from No. 5 to acquire the No. 2 pick from the Cleveland Browns. Jacksonville gave up several future picks to move and select Hunter, including next year’s first-round pick.

“It means a lot that they gave up so much, so I know they believe in me,” Hunter told reporters in Green Bay. “I just gotta go out there and make sure that what they put in and the time that they (put in) about this… I make sure they was right.”

Hunter is the highest cornerback selected in the draft and the first wide receiver to go in the top two picks since Calvin Johnson in 2007.

He becomes the first CU player selected in the first round since Nate Solder (No. 17 to the Patriots) and Jimmy Smith (No. 27 to the Ravens) in 2011 and the program’s first top-five pick since Michael Westbrook went No. 4 overall to the then-Redskins in 1995.

After two decorated seasons in Boulder, Hunter left his mark at CU. He became the Buffs’ second Heisman Trophy winner. He also won the Bednarik Award as the top defensive player in the country and the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver, among other honors.

Hunter will make his return to Colorado this season as the Jaguars are scheduled to visit the Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in 2025.

Across his Buffs career, Hunter finished with 153 catches for 1,979 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns to go with 66 tackles, seven interceptions and a forced fumble on defense.

Now he’ll attempt to play on offense and defense in the NFL in his home state of Florida.

Jaguars coach Liam Coen said they view Hunter as a wide receiver, first and foremost, to start his career, but they are going to bring him along at cornerback, as well, as they try to maximize everything Hunter brings to the table.

“We do have to be fluid throughout,” Coen said. “We’ll have a plan right now of primarily on offense with learning the defensive system and practicing on the defensive side of the ball throughout this offseason program and then, as we continue to grow, we have to be fluid throughout this whole process. We’ve had multiple conversations at length with athletic training, equipment, sports science, coaching, everybody involved. We have a plan in place and that’s really where we’ll start.”

The Jaguars feel Hunter is destined for stardom.

“We’re not gonna ask him to be any more than him because by doing so, he elevates not only this football, not only this city, but the sport itself,” Jacksonville general manager James Gladstone said. “Along the way, you can count how many drafts you want to, there are players who have the capacity to alter a game; there are players who have the capacity to alter the trajectory of a team; there are very few players who the capacity to alter the trajectory of the sport itself.

“Travis, while he has a lot to still earn, in our eyes, has the potential to do just that.”
