Denver police arrest two brothers in connection with Monday LoDo shooting

Denver police arrested a pair of brothers in connection with a shooting in LoDo Monday evening.

Joseph Valdez, 18, and Randall Valdez, 22, were taken into custody hours after the incident on suspicion of several charges, including attempted first degree murder and felony menacing, according to a news release and a probable cause affidavit from the Denver Police Department.

The incident began when one of the brothers approached a man in the area of 22nd and Larimer streets in LoDo at around 8:30 p.m. Monday evening and offered to sell him cocaine or fentanyl, according to the affidavit and the release.

The man became upset by the offer, as he has family with substance abuse issues, he later said to detectives at the hospital, according to the affidavit. The two started to argue. That argument led to a fight, with the brother punching the man in the face before taking a gun from the waistband of his pants and firing it twice, once into the ground and a second time into the man’s knee.

Officers responded to the shooting at about 8:41 p.m. Monday, according to the release. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the knee that was not life threatening, according to the affidavit. He was transported to a hospital, where he is expected to survive the injury.

About 20 minutes later, police received another call of shots fired in the 2700 block of Blake Street, the release said.

The call came from a woman who said that her mother-in-law had said she was shot while driving, the affidavit said. Police later confirmed that the mother-in-law had been shot at, not shot, while driving on Blake Street.

Several other callers reported gunshots in the area on Blake Street, with a total of 16 detected by ShotSpotter, the affidavit said.

Officers responded to the area and identified the Valdez brothers as the two suspects based on matching physical descriptions from witness accounts, according to the affidavit.

As police were trying to arrest Randall Valdez, he allegedly threw a gun and a bag containing ammunition over a nearby fence, the affidavit said. Joseph Valdez resisted arrest and had to be sedated by Denver Health paramedics after he was handcuffed.

Officers found several other parties who identified the two brothers as the people who had shot at them during the incident, according to the affidavit. Police later found at least 10 bullet casings near the intersection of 27th and Blake streets that appeared to be connected with the incident.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing at this time. Anyone who may have witnessed it, or has photos or videos, is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867.
