Colorado State Patrol will increase DUI enforcement for a 14-day period starting Thursday, using patrols and sobriety checkpoints to target impaired drivers on the road.
The targeted period of enforcement will take place during what’s known as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer — the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, according to a news release from the Colorado Department of Transportation. The enforcement will be undertaken by CSP and 74 different local law enforcement agencies, with support from CDOT.
“Colorado summers are meant to be memorable for the right reasons, not because you got a DUI,” said Col. Matthew Packard, chief of Colorado State Patrol, in the news release. “Remember that DUIs carry serious consequences like jail time, fines, license suspension and more. Colorado State Patrol remains dedicated to removing impaired drivers from Colorado roads this summer.”
The enforcement is one of 16 periods targeting impaired drivers throughout the year around national holidays and large public events, according to the release. Last year, there were over 3,000 serious injuries on Colorado roads, 55% of which occurred during the time period.
Preliminary data points to the recent Memorial Day Weekend DUI enforcement period leading to 170 arrests across 85 different agencies, including CSP, the Fort Collins Police Department and the Loveland Police Department, the release says.
“If you’ve been drinking, use a ride-share service, taxi or public transit, said Darrell Lingk, safety director of CDOT’s Office of Transportation, in the release. “Hold your friends and family accountable and never let them drive under the influence.”
