A crash involving multiple semi-trucks traveling on Interstate 70 westbound sent three people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Early reports indicate that just past 3 p.m. Wednesday a truck collided with another in the westbound direction, sending both into the eastbound lanes where they rolled over near the Eisenhower Tunnel, according to a news release from Colorado State Patrol. One of the trucks hit additional vehicles driving in the other direction.

The crash closed the roadway for nearly nine hours while crews cleaned up the scene, according to a social media post from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

During that time, I-70 was fully closed in the westbound direction at the Eisenhower Tunnel and in the eastbound direction near Silverthorne, according to the release. Drivers were detoured onto U.S. 6 while responders cleaned up the scene.

The crash is still being investigated by CSP. Anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken with investigators should contact dispatch at (970) 249-4392.
