Dog stuck in trench at Parker construction zone rescued with excavator’s help

A dog was rescued from a trench in a Parker construction zone by South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) crews Monday afternoon, according to a SMFR post on social media platform X.

At 3:55 p.m., Monday, SMFR was requested to assist Douglas County Animal Control in rescuing a dog that became stuck in a trench.

The dog’s name is Carl, a Neapolitan Mastiff. According to a post on Facebook from Big Dogs Huge Paws, he went missing from a home near South Parker Road and Stroh Road on Sunday.

Carl fell eight feet into the trench at South Parker Road and North Pinery Parkway, SMFR said.

Multiple agency crew members from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Animal Control and construction crews with Fiore & Sons, Inc., assisted in the rescue of the canine by using shovels, pickaxes and an excavator.

Photos and videos from the SMFR X social media account tell the tale of the rescue, showing crews delicately digging a hole near the dog as well as rescue crews pulling the dog out of the ditch and comforting it after being rescued.

The rescue was successful and Carl was taken to a nearby veterinary emergency room for evaluation. He did suffer from mild dehydration, but is expected to make a full recovery.
