Aurora man sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping and assault of hotel employee

A man in Aurora was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for a robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault he committed in 2020.

18th Judicial District Court Judge Jacob Edson sentenced Khafre Buxton, 37, to 99-years-to-life in prison, according to a release from the District Attorney’s office.

Evidence and testimony at trial showed that on December 19, 2020, Buxton arrived at the Quality Inn located in the 1000 block of South Abilene Street and knocked on the door.

Around 3 a.m. in the morning the front desk clerk of the hotel let Buxton in. Upon entering Buxton pulled out a machete and took the clerk and a security guard to a back office to take money out of a filing cabinet.

Buxton then kidnapped the clerk and left the hotel with her in his car.

In the early hours of the morning, Aurora Police Department officers were dispatched to an aggravated robbery call, according to an Arapahoe County release.

Investigators testified Buxton drove the car to a nearby hardware store, where he sexually assaulted the female clerk.

Aurora police officers spotted the car down the street and began and traffic stop.

During the stop the victim was able to get out of the vehicle and ran towards police officers.

Police arrested Buxton without further incident and charged him with multiple felonies.

During his trial, jurors convicted Buxton of all counts and he was formally sentenced to the following convictions on June 13, 2025: two counts of second-degree kidnapping; sexual assault; two counts of aggravated robbery; first-degree burglary; unlawful sexual contact and a violent crime sentence enhancer.

“The defendant terrorized an innocent front desk clerk and a security guard who were doing nothing more than working their routine job that night,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Gallo said in the release. “Instead of taking cash and leaving, Mr. Buxton continued his crime spree by kidnapping the clerk and sexually assaulting her. I commend the Aurora Police Department for their quick response times which ultimately led to the capture of the defendant less than a mile down the road.”

Added District Attorney Amy Padden: “This lengthy prison sentence highlights our commitment to ensuring violent offenders are held accountable to the fullest extent possible. His egregious actions that preyed upon individuals working in our community warrant a lengthy prison sentence in the Department of Corrections.”
