Denver Nuggets reportedly plan to have Jonas Valanciunas honor NBA contract

It looks like the Nuggets will play hardball.

The franchise told Jonas Valanciunas’s representatives that they plan to have the veteran center honor his NBA contract, according to an ESPN report Sunday afternoon.

Denver traded Dario Saric to Sacramento to acquire Valanciunas last week, but things got complicated amid reports the 33-year-old hoped to make a move to Greek club Panathinaikos. He reportedly traveled to Athens to meet with the team, but there’s still one guaranteed year left on Valanciunas’s contract.

In order for the Lithuanian center for make the move, he would have to reach a contract buyout with the Nuggets once the trade is officially processed. That hadn’t happened as of Sunday afternoon, as the teams need to complete physicals and iron out the salary cap implications. Valanciunas is reportedly in Europe, so it may be a few days before he can get to Denver to go through a physical.

The Nuggets want Valanciunas to be the franchise’s next backup center, and it looks like they’re willing to hold him to his contract to make that happen.
