The Avalanche have completed Jared Bednar’s coaching staff.
Dave Hakstol, the former head coach of the Seattle Kraken, was hired by Colorado as an assistant coach. The 56-year-old also served as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers.
“Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience behind the bench and will be a great fit on Jared’s staff,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said. “He has an extensive coaching background with a lot of success and will be a valuable addition to our team.”
Hakstol led the Kraken from 2021-24. He was a finalist for the 2023 Jack Adams Award. He spent the 2024-25 season as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the Spengler Cup.
“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the Avalanche,” Hakstol said. “This is a proud organization with a lot of talented players and a tremendous coaching staff led by Jared Bednar. I look forward to being a part of this special group and can’t wait to get to work and help the team in any way that I can.
“My family and I are also very much looking forward to being a part of this community and wonderful state of Colorado.”
Hakstol is a native of Drayton Valley, Alberta. He was an assistant coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2019-21. He spent 15 seasons coaching alma mater North Dakota prior to making the leap to the NHL with the Flyers. He coached Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon as an assistant with Team Canada at the 2017 and 2019 IIHF World Championships.
