Family identifies man who drowned paddleboarding at Chatfield State Park

The family of James Anthony Hirsh identified him as the man who drowned earlier this week at Chatfield State Park during a paddleboarding outing with his children.

Hirsh was a father of four and had taken his sons paddleboarding when a gust of wind knocked them into the water, according to a GoFundMe page set up by the family. Hirsh never resurfaced.

The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. Monday, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Witnesses said Hirsch and two of his children were on the same paddleboard when a strong gust of wind capsized it. Nearby paddleboarders were able to rescue the children, but were unable to reach Hirsch.

Rescue teams responded to search the reservoir. Using sonar and an underwater drone, CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team officers recovered Hirsch’s body around 7:15 p.m. CPW noted he was not wearing a safety floatation jacket at the time.

The GoFundMe campaign is accepting donations to “help ease the burden on his grieving blended family.” This includes child support, funeral costs, and other future support of the children.

As of Thursday, the fundraiser had received several contributions. The campaign can be found here.
