Crash between Amtrak train and semi-trailer injures one in Gilpin County; multiple roads closed

Truck and train crash

A crash that occurred between an Amtrak train and truck closed several roads in Gilpin County Monday morning.

On Monday, Amtrak Train 5 was traveling from Chicago to the San Francisco Bay at about 11:30 a.m. when it came into contact with a large vehicle west of Denver, the company said in a statement.

According to Amtrak, aboard the train were a total 279 of people, including passengers and crew members.

In a Facebook post from the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office, the office said the crash initially shut down South Beaver Creek Road, Pactolus Lake Road and Highway 72 in both directions.

There were no fatalities in the crash, but the semi driver was taken to the hospital by a Flight for Life helicopter with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The driver was issued a citation alleging he failed to stop at a railroad crossing.

South Beaver Creek Road and Pactolus Lake Road remain closed, however as of 11:38 a.m. Monday. Highway 72 has since reopened.

Amtrak said it will work with local law enforcement to investigate the crash.

According to the Sheriffs office, clean up on the train accident continues.

Officials estimate that South Beaver Creek Road will remain closed for another three to five hours.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
