Landspout in Franktown damages several businesses

A landspout damaged several businesses in Franktown Monday afternoon, according to a post on X from Franktown Fire.

The fast-moving landspout, which is a type of tornado that forms from the ground up, hit near the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway 86.

Seven businesses located in a shopping center sustained roof damage, according to the post.

No injuries were reported, and all individuals in the area have been accounted for Frankstown Fire said.

The National Weather Service report said the landspout lasted about 90 seconds.

The majority — about 85% to 90% — of tornadoes in Colorado are classified as landspouts. Unlike supercell tornadoes, which form from mesocyclones and can persist for more than an hour, landspouts form from the ground up due to colliding wind boundaries and are typically weaker and shorter-lived.
