Colorado native Hunter Maldonado continues journey with third NBA Summer League experience

LAS VEGAS — Hunter Maldonado approached his third go-round at NBA Summer League with an eye toward precision.
The Colorado Springs native, Vista Ridge grad and one of the all-time greats for the University of Wyoming played this summer with the Indiana Pacers and made it a point to fine-tune the areas in his game he felt could improve over the last two summers spent with the Oklahoma City Thunder as well as the 2023-24 NBA G-League season with Oklahoma City, and this past year with MHP Risen in Ludwisburg, Germany.
“The first time is really just excitement and nerves just for being here,” Maldonado said Thursday evening at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center after scoring seven points in 24 minutes with four rebounds, three steals and an assist in a win over the New York Knicks. “Third time a lot more comfortable, know what to expect. But still it’s an opportunity to showcase what I am, what I’m about and really just go out there and play the best I can. So it’s always fun.
“It’s just trying to show that I can clean those things that I need to work on up. So, for me, kind of expectation-wise it’s just holding myself to that standard and being able to make sure I’m really efficient and doing the things I worked on.”
Everything in the NBA Summer League, which consists of only a handful or so or games, comes with a tiny sample size. Still, the 6-foot-7 Maldonado cut his turnovers from 2.7 per game last year to 0.5 this year. That was a major goal.
This was after the year spent in Germany averaging 9.9 points per game. It was a culture shock, being that far from home for the first time, but he was able to visit several countries during short breaks and maintain his game all the while.
“At Wyoming I was featured a lot in the post,” he said of differences in his style of play over the years. “The last couple years I’ve been shooting a lot more 3s and trying to be a lot more efficient in terms of picking and choosing when I get down the middle and make the right reads. I was still turning it over a lot about a year and a half ago. I’ve cut that down this year, so trying to stay on top of that while still being able to produce the same amount of assists and shoot it as efficiently as I did in my first year as a pro.”
Indiana appreciated what he brought the team this summer.
“He’s just a gamer,” Pacers summer coach Isaac Yacob said. “He’s like a small forward, but he can handle. He can get to the paint. He’s in the right place at the right time, high-IQ guy. He’s been great for us all summer.”
The next step remains unknown. Maldonado said he and his agent will review options. Everything remains on the table.
“Everywhere over there is a new experience,” he said of potentially pursuing different overseas options. “There will be pros and cons anywhere you go. It’s just about fit. If it’s a good fit and a good league over there, I’ll go over there. If it’s staying here, then I’ll stay here. Whatever sets me up for the future. I’ve just got to see what fits ad go from there.”
