Entering training camp, Broncos try to temper expectations at least a little bit

Broncos Training Camp Day 1

ENGLEWOOD – There is Super Bowl talk surrounding the Broncos. Tackle Mike McGlinchey tried a bit Tuesday to slow it down.

“It’s July 22 and we have a long way to go,’’ McGlinchey said.

McGlinchey and other veterans reported for training camp at Broncos Park. With rookies having reported last Wednesday, there will be full-squad acclimation practices Wednesday and Thursday. Then the first day of training camp is Friday.

But try as he did to suppress the hype, McGlinchey couldn’t deny he is “really excited about what we have here” and said the Broncos have some of the attributes San Francisco did when the 49ers made Super Bowl LIV in the 2019 season. He was a starter on the team that lost 31-20 to Kansas City.

“You have to have a little bit of luck,’’ McGlinchey said of what he can say to teammates about what it takes to make the Super Bowl. “You’ve got to be able to be your best when your best is needed. I think we have the guys that are made up of the right stuff in this locker room, and certainly the right coaching staff to get us in place to have those opportunities and win those kind of games.”

The Broncos in 2024 went 10-7, their first winning season since 2016, and made the playoffs for the first time since winning Super Bowl 50 in 2015. They then added some key pieces on defense in safety Talanoa Hufanga, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron and on offense in tight end Evan Engram and running backs J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey, a rookie.

Even though star defensive back Pat Surtain didn’t utter “Super Bowl,’’ he did say that expectations are high.

“You want to set expectations pretty high,’’ he said. “You can’t allow yourself to waver from the fact that we have a lot of goals to accomplish as a team. We’re just going to take it day-by-day in training camp, and just keep sharpening iron, sharpening our toolbox and keep on getting better.”

Surtain has played a key role in the Broncos’ resurgence, having been named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2024. He has talked about wanting to be even better in 2025.

“Adding that hardware to my resume, it’s pretty cool, but honestly, I just stay grounded, and stay humble and stay in the thick of things,’’ Surtain said. “You can be at the top like that and fall that quickly, so I just go back to my work and the work I put in each and every year.”

The notable additions will help Surtain on defense. And McGlinchey knows all about Hufanga and Greenlaw.

McGlinchey, who played for the 49ers from 2018-22, was Greenlaw’s San Francisco teammate from 2019-22 and Hufanga’s teammate from 2021-22. He was ecstatic when the Broncos lured the two away from the 49ers in March.

“Their play speaks for themselves,’’ McGlinchey said. “I think (Hufanga) and Dre are two of the best at their positions across the league, and they’re monstrous additions for us defensively.

“The two of them bring such an energy, especially (because) the defensive side of the football is a very emotional, energetic kind of style of play. You can feel Dre Greenlaw when he steps onto the field. You can feel (Hufanga) when he makes plays in the box or takes a chance on a great interception. Those two are going to help us tremendously.”

Those additions are one reason some saying the Broncos could have the NFL’s top defense in 2025. In 2024, they ranked No. 3 in the league in scoring defense and No. 7 in total defense.

The Broncos also have beefed up the offense. Bo Nix has been given more weapons and the second-year quarterback figures to take another step after an impressive rookie season.

“He’s going to make a lot of noise, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he does and his success moving forward,’’ Surtain said.

McGlinchey said the offensive line staying intact since last season and the additions of Dobbins and Harvey will help the offense. He, too, expects Nix to continue to mature.

“Certainly the experience of playing football games in this league is very, very valuable,’’ McGlinchey said. “Now he knows what it feels like. He knows what it looks like. He knows, obviously, that he is very good at it, and I think that just gives him the hunger for more. I think that’s what’s really impressive about Bo is his competitive nature of just trying to get the most out of himself every single day.”

True, Tuesday was just July 22, but McGlinchey still touched upon how the Broncos could be on the path to an impressive season.

“We’re really excited to come into work and earn a chance to be at the top of the NFL,’’ he said. “That’s what we’re going to try to do.”
