Mike McGlinchey absence not expected to linger | Broncos training camp Day 1
ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Friday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.
Plays of the day
— Quarterback Bo Nix sprinted outside the pocket, and while on the run, hit wide receiver Pat Bryant right in the numbers on a crossing route for a first down.
— Quarterback Sam Ehlinger tossed a deep ba/0ll down the sideline to wide receiver Jerjuan Newton. The teardrop pass evaded multiple defenders, including safety P.J. Locke, and went right into Newton’s hands for a long gain.

Position battle
Nickel: Returning cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian earned most of the nickel reps with Denver’s first-team defense during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 practice. But rookie Jahdae Barron rotated into his place at times. Barron also got a look at outside cornerback. But the nickel competition is something to watch moving forward.
Mark Kiszla: Is Courtland Sutton the odd man out in the Broncos' new winning core?
Stock rising
LB Lavelle Bailey: He recorded one interception and one pass breakup during 11-on-11 drills. The second-year inside linebacker, undrafted from Fresno State, appeared in 10 games last season. Bailey played on 52% of special teams snaps. Is he ready to enter the rotation on defense?

Stock falling
TE Lucas Krull: He bobbled a catch that led to Bailey’s interception playing 11-on-11. Krull needs a strong training camp to establish his presence in a suddenly deep tight end room. Rookie Caleb Lohner, a seventh-round pick, will get plenty of looks as a former college basketball player.

Attendance check
Starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey was the only player absent from practice Monday. Coach Sean Payton did not elaborate on the reason. But he said that McGlinchey “should be returning … either tomorrow or Monday.”
Injury report
Wide receiver A.T. Perry is the only player on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). He was in attendance on Friday but only watched practice.
What’s next
Training camp continues with practice at 10 a.m. Saturday at Broncos Park. Denver practiced third downs on Friday for the first time this training camp. The team will practice in pads on Monday, Payton said.
