2. MLB trade deadline (4 p.m. Thursday) — You know what we call the Ryan McMahon trade to the Yankees? A start. If Jake Bird and German Marquez are still here Friday, the Rockies whiffed.

3. 89th CGA Amateur Championship (Wednesday-Saturday) — Westminster’s Walnut Creek Golf Preserve hosts an event whose past medalists include U.S. Open champs Hale Irwin, Steve Jones and Wyndham Clark.

Colorado Alumni Faceoff (5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24) — The first Denver Pioneers alumni vs. Avalanche alumni game promises showings from Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Milan Hejduk, Adam Foote, Troy Terry and Tyson Barrie. Tickets start at $33 (coloradonhlalumni.com).

On this day

July 27, 1959 — The Continental League, a third pro baseball league, was announced with teams in New York, Houston, Minneapolis, Toronto and Denver. The league broke up 12 months later, and Colorado is still waiting for a big-league baseball team worth watching.
