Running backs featured in first practice with full pads | Broncos training camp Day 3

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Monday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette:

Play of the day

Tight end Evan Engram caught a deep pass in 7-on-7 from quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Engram made an impressive leaping grab near the sideline and sprinted downfield for a would-be touchdown. He hauled in several nice grabs throughout the course of practice.

Position battle

Running back: The Broncos wore full pads for the first time in training camp, and during 11-on-11 periods, the running backs were heavily featured. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey earned the bulk of carries with the first-team offense. Both made several nice runs. But it’s difficult to accurately judge running back play until preseason games start. The starting job is still up for grabs.

RT Alex Palczewski: The reserve offensive lineman is getting extra work in training camp. Starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey dressed in full pads but was not full-go in team periods. Palczewski — after making three starts last season — filled in with a positive endorsement from head coach Sean Payton.

“He’s played a lot of football,” Payton said Monday. “He’s smart. He can go inside and play guard. He can play tackle. He can play the jumbo tight end. … He’s strong. We didn’t feel like there was a step backwards when he was playing.”

Weather: The heat is on for training camp. The afternoon temperatures at Broncos Park soared into the upper-90s with no shade relief for fans sitting in the temporary stands south of the practice fields. Some good news? Temps are expected to drop over the next several days.
