QB Sam Ehlinger’s deep ball shines in first team scrimmage | Broncos training camp Day 8

Broncos week 2

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Saturday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.

Play of the day

Sam Ehlinger showed off an impressive long ball on consecutive throws in Denver’s first scrimmage of training camp. The third-string quarterback went deep for completions to wide receivers Jerjuan Newton and Courtney Jackson during a full team period. It will be difficult for Ehlinger to overtake Jarrett Stidham for the backup QB role. But Ehlinger has enough arm talent to play in the NFL.

Position battle

Outside linebacker: The Broncos have a wealth of edge rushers beyond Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper. On Saturday, second-year outside linebackers Jonah Elliss and Dondrea Tillman both made their presence felt in the scrimmage with sacks. Expect both players to be in the rotation for defensive snaps in 2025.

Stock rising

DE Zach Allen: The returning All-Pro defensive end cashed in on Saturday with a four-year, $102-million contract extension. He also logged at least one sack during the team’s scrimmage. Allen is now the highest-paid player on the roster. He’s played like it throughout the course of training camp.

Stock falling

Centers: It wasn’t a great day for snapping the football. Bo Nix fumbled one snap handled by starting center Luke Wattenberg. Third-string center Joe Michalski sent two shotgun snaps way over Ehlinger’s head. Training camp is the perfect time to iron out those mistakes before they become potentially back-breaking in the regular season.

Attendance check

Fullback Michael Burton was at practice but not in full pads. He did not participate in the scrimmage.

The Jets claimed cornerback Mario Goodrich on waivers Saturday after he was released by the Broncos.

Injury report

The following players watched but did not practice: ILB Dre Greenlaw (leg), OLB Que Robinson (bone bruise), ILB Alex Singelton (thumb) and wide receiver A.T Perry (PUP list). Singleton dressed in full pads despite sitting out. He’s expected back next week.

What’s next

Training camp continues with practice at 10 a.m. Monday at Broncos Park. Players are off Sunday. The Broncos will practice on Monday and Tuesday before traveling west for a joint practice and preseason game at the San Francisco 49ers.
