One person is in custody after stealing an Aurora Police Department marked cruiser and leading officers on a chase Tuesday morning.
What initially began as a burglary investigation turned south after the suspect jumped into a patrol car that did not have its anti-theft system activated, the Aurora police officials said Tuesday.
It happened about 8:40 a.m. Tuesday when officers responded to the report of a burglary at the 700 block of Oswego Court.
Officers arrested Brayan Reyes-Bernal, 31, on suspicion of car theft, burglary, hit-and-run and eluding police, according to Aurora police.
Reyes-Bernal then allegedly led police on a 30-minute chase through multiple jurisdictions, only stopping after they were rammed by an APD sergeant at the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Airport Boulevard, according to the department on social media.
The suspect and the sergeant who crashed into them were both injured in the collision, police said. Authorities do not currently know the extent of their injuries but expect both to be non-life threatening.
No other crashes or injuries occurred due to the chase, officials said. Westbound Alameda Avenue was closed for over an hour and a half Tuesday morning while police conducted the investigation.
Police do not yet know whether the suspect was part of the original burglary, and will conduct an investigation both into that incident as well as why the car’s anti-theft system was not activated.
“He was currently on probation out of Adams County for felony trespassing and has a lengthy criminal history, including prior arrests for domestic violence and DUI,” according to an APD news release.
