Aurora police issue 22 pedestrian, 7 driver tickets in safety campaign

Aurora Police Department pedestrian safety campaign

Aurora Police Department officers handed out 22 tickets to pedestrians and six tickets to drivers in a two-day traffic enforcement operation with pedestrian safety in mind, police said Thursday.

On Wednesday, APD officers ran an enforcement operation along Colfax Avenue focused on pedestrians, citing and educating people not obeying signals and signs, police said.

Officers handed out 22 tickets to pedestrians who failed to obey signals and signs, six tickets to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians and five other traffic summonses. During the operation, officers also made four warrant arrests and handed out three traffic warnings, police said.

“While vehicles can be deadly when traffic laws aren’t followed, pedestrians also have a responsibility to obey signals and signage for their own safety,” a press release from APD said.

Thursday, officers focused on drivers at Chambers Road and Iliff Avenue, issuing warning and citations to drivers putting pedestrians in danger. Officers stopped six drivers and handed out one ticket, police said.

Tickets range from $50 to $150 depending on various factors like severity, police said.

Every driver who was stopped turned onto Iliff while a pedestrian was still in the crosswalk, APD spokesperson Gabby Easterwood told The Denver Gazette.

“To put it plainly we just want our citizens to make it to their destination safely, whether that’s a pedestrian or a vehicle,” Easterwood said. “Following posted signage and crossing any street at a crosswalk is imperative. Paying attention and not being on a cell phone is also critical — especially on major roadways where it’s legal to cross.”

In 2025 so far, APD has reported eight fatal pedestrian crashes, 23 pedestrian crashes without injury, 43 with “possible” injury and 28 with suspected serious injury, adding up to a total of 172 pedestrian crashes year-to-date, according to APD data.

Of the total, 50 of the pedestrians involved in crashes were bicyclists, 98 were on foot, 10 were on a scooter, six were in wheelchairs, and the other 14 were using another type of non-motor vehicle transportation.

Denver’s City Council decriminalized jaywalking in 2023.
