Severe thunderstorms to threaten cities west of Denver Saturday afternoon

The National Weather Service placed much of the area between Denver and Central City under a severe thunderstorm warning Saturday afternoon.

Bringing with them wind gusts of up to 50 mph and ping pong sized hail, the thunderstorms will command the skies above Denver and neighboring municipalities to its west, including Golden, Morrison, Evergreen and Kittredge, according to a social media post from NWS Boulder.

Up to nearly 150,000 people living in the areas could be exposed to the storm, according to the post.

Initially posted just before 4:15 p.m. Saturday, the warning was valid until 5 p.m.

Those in the affected areas should seek shelter inside and away from windows while the warning is in place, officials said Saturday.
