Dozens of hot air balloons set to rise high above major Colorado city this weekend
Dozens of hot air balloons are set to rise about Colorado Springs over Labor Day Weekend – weather pending.
Capable of attracting more than 250,000 attendees over the long weekend, it’s estimated that about 70 to 80 balloons take flight during the festival, most of which do so several times. The event is set to take place Saturday through Monday in the city’s Memorial Park, which is located just east of downtown and is home to Prospect Lake.
On August 30, the morning session will kick off at 5:15 a.m. when the park and concessions open, followed by a 6 a.m. drone show and a 7 a.m. balloon lift off. The evening session on Saturday is set to start at 3:30 p.m., with live music and a 7 p.m. balloon glow. A drone show will follow the balloon glow.
Sunday has a similar schedule throughout the day and Monday will have a similar morning session but no events during the evening.
Other events that take place throughout the weekend include a parkour competition, paddleboard rentals on Prospect Lake, remote control balloon displays, skydive performances, a 5K, an aerial acrobatic show, and more. Find a full break-down of the schedule here and note that some events are weather-dependent. Stormy conditions are expected over the weekend in Colorado Springs and this may prevent balloons from taking flight. That said, the launch times of balloons are early, scheduled during a time of the day when fewer storms tend to be present.
Those who are unable to attend the event may still spot balloons in the air with an early wake-up call. Those living in the surrounding area should be aware that a balloon may end up landing in their yard or on their street. Pilots have limited control over flight path, typically subject to following along with whatever wind currents are present.
Labor Day Lift Off started in 1977 as the Colorado Balloon Classic. It’s remained one of the city’s most notable events for decades.
