Scenic gondola that soars to 12,012 feet the perfect roadside stop on trip across Colorado

Reaching an elevation of 12,012 feet above sea level, there’s a scenic tramway in Colorado that makes for the perfect pit stop during a road trip across the state.
Found at the top of Monarch Pass, the Monarch Mountain at the Crest’s Scenic Tramway delivers stunning views of five mountain ranges. It’s easy to get to, too, found right along the side of Highway 50.
The original gift shop and restaurant at the top of the pass was first opened in 1954, but it wouldn’t be until 1966 that the historic tramway would be constructed. The tramway’s drive system was modernized in 2015, with additional remodeling taking place after Monarch Mountain ski area purchased the Crest and Tramway in 2022.
One aspect that makes this a particularly convenient road trip stop is the food that’s sold on-site, including burritos, tacos, and more. There’s also a visitor’s center that provides education information and a gift shop.
The tram is operational during summer months, with a tram ticket costing $22 for adults. Discounts may be available for skiers and snowboarders who have a pass for the upcoming season at the nearby Monarch Mountain ski area – 50% off at time of publishing. It’s also worth noting that dogs are allowed onboard, and that riders can also opt to walk down a two-mile maintenance road for their descent should they want to shake out their legs.
