A person died on Interstate 25 southbound Tuesday after their vehicle was hit by a stray tire that came off another vehicle traveling in the northbound direction.

Police first responded to the scene where the southbound driver sustained fatal injuries from the crash just north of Ridgegate Parkway at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, officials from the City of Lone Tree said in a statement Wednesday morning.

The driver who lost their tire pulled over to the shoulder of the road and remained at the scene until police arrived, officials said. The traffic flow on the interstate was disrupted for several hours while the investigation was completed.

Authorities are still investigating what led to the tire coming off the northbound driver’s vehicle and the other circumstances leading to the crash.
