Broncos rookie RJ Harvey: ‘Great things are going to come soon’

Rookie running back RJ Harvey has a message for Broncos fans.

“Great things are going to come soon,’’ he told The Denver Gazette.

Harvey is a low-key guy, but he’s very confident. Shortly after he was selected out of Central Florida by Denver in the second round of last April’s draft, he compared himself favorably to Alvin Kamara, a star running back with New Orleans who had Sean Payton as his Saints coach from 2017-21.

Payton is now in his third season with the Broncos. Harvey reiterated he can be a similar player for Payton as Kamara, a five-time Pro Bowl selection.

“Definitely, I feel like I can,’’ Harvey said. “I got to put in the work and the time and just keep playing every day, and as long as I put the work in and study like I’m supposed to, everything will come to fruition.”

Harvey looked good in his regular-season debut in a 20-12 win over Tennessee last Sunday, carrying six times for 70 yards, including having a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter. He expects to be more comfortable in his second game, on Sunday (2:05 p.m., CBS) at Indianapolis.

“Yeah, definitely,’’ he said. “That first game I got all the jitters out, but now I feel more comfortable after getting the first game out of the way.”

Butterflies aside, Harvey had Denver’s most electrifying play in the opener. His 50-yard run took the Broncos to the Titans 30 and set up a 19-yard touchdown run by J.K. Dobbins to put them up 20-12 with 7:37 left in the game.

“I should have scored,’’ said Harvey, pushed out of bounds by linebacker Cedric Gray. “But (Gray) had a pretty good angle on me. Next time I’ll score.’’

Still, Harvey’s big run led to his phone blowing up.

“I got a lot of texts, a lot of calls, a lot of DMs,’’ said Harvey, estimating he received several dozen. “A lot of people were proud of how I played the game, and hopefully I can keep popping big runs.”

The run was the longest for the Broncos since Latavius Murray had a 52-yard jaunt at Carolina on Nov. 27, 2022. Harvey was excited to hear about that since Murray also played at Central Florida and has served as a mentor.

“That was crazy,’’ Harvey said. “UCF, they actually posted it. I saw it on Instagram. It was pretty cool. Tay, he taught me everything. He told me if I ever need help (in the NFL) just to call him. We’ve got a great relationship.”

Harvey said he hasn’t dialed up Murray yet since the start of training camp but that he might soon. In the meantime, the Broncos certainly seem pleased so far with their rookie.

In the opener, Dobbins started and had 16 carries for 63 yards. Harvey figures to again come off the bench against the Colts, but could be in line for more carries.

“He’s explosive, good vision,’’ said offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. “Really excited about how he played and excited for what he has going in his future.”

After all, Harvey is expecting great things in the future.
