Thompson School Board finalizes new policies on federal law enforcement access
The Thompson School Board formalized new policies related to the district’s approach to federal law enforcement at a meeting Wednesday night.
The policies require state and federal law enforcement agencies like Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to provide a warrant or subpoena before being given access to any district students or staff, establish a protocol for district staff if a federal agency makes an appearance at a district facility, and limits the records the district keeps on students’ citizenship status.
The new policies were requirements of recent state legislation which required such policies to be put in place by Sept. 1.
The district called a special meeting prior to their last study session earlier this month to approve the policies temporarily, in order to meet the requirements, and the second reading of the two policies was approved unanimously by the school board Wednesday, making them permanent.
