Broncos to put Ben Powers on IR after biceps surgery, hope to have him back in December

LONDON – Broncos starting left guard Ben Powers suffered a torn left biceps muscle in Sunday’s game at Philadelphia and will be placed on injured reserve, a source said Monday.

According to the source, Powers had surgery on Monday, and the Broncos are hoping he can return in early to mid-December.

Powers was hurt late in the 21-17 win over the Eagles, but stayed in the game and played all 74 offensive snaps. The Broncos announced after the game that he did not travel with the team to London for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

The Broncos could replace Powers in the lineup with third-year pro Alex Palczewski, who has been the top reserve at right guard and right tackle. If the Broncos don’t want to move Palczewski to the left side, other possibilities are Matt Peart and Alex Forysth. The Broncos also have veteran Calvin Throckmorton on the practice squad, and he could be available for an elevation or to be signed to the 53-man roster.

Powers, in his seventh NFL season, signed a four-year, $52 million contract with the Broncos as a free agent in March 2023. He had been very durable, starting all 40 regular-season and playoff games since coming to Denver.

The Broncos on Monday also signed wide receiver Samori Toure to the practice squad, filling the spot from Garret Wallow being signed last Saturday off the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Toure, taken out of Nebraska by Green Bay in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, got into 22 games for the Packers from 2022-23 and had 13 catches for 160 yards.
