Injured Broncos star Pat Surtain vows on podcast to be ‘back out there in no time’

ENGLEWOOD – Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain II spent Wednesday’s practice riding a stationary bike on a side field.

As for when he will back on the main practice field, that remains uncertain.

Surtain suffered a left pectoral strain in Sunday’s 44-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys. He was one of three Denver players to not practice Wednesday at Broncos Park, the others being wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (concussion) and tight end Nate Adkins (knee).

Surtain is not expected to play Sunday at Houston and a source said Monday the Broncos consider him “week to week.” Asked Wednesday if Surtain is a candidate for injured reserve, Broncos coach Sean Payton offered no hint.

“We’ve discussed, obviously we’ve had those discussions,’’ he said.

Surtain, injured late in the first half when tackling Cowboys receiver George Pickens, spoke about his injury on his weekly podcast.

“I’m going to attack rehab,’’ he said. “Look to get better. Look to get stronger.  … Minor setback. I’m going to get back right. … Your boy is going to be back out there in no time.”

Payton declined to speculate on how he might go about replacing Surtain against the Texans. He was asked if rookie Jahdae Barron, who has been playing inside cornerback, could be a candidate to fill Surtain’s outside spot.

“We’ll see,’’ Payton said. “(I’m) not going to tell you if he’s playing outside or inside. Why would I do that?”

Kris Abrams-Draine replaced Surtain in the second half against the Cowboys, and Payton said he did well.

“He’s extremely intelligent and I would say he might have the best hands on this team,’’ Payton said of the second-year man. “He’s got elite ball skills.”

Despite Surtain being hurt, Reese Taylor, a cornerback on the practice squad, said Surtain has been taking an active role “on and off the field” in helping get the Broncos ready for the Texans.

“He’s going to be definitely in their ear, helping (defensive backs) in the meeting rooms and helping them at practice understanding the best ways to go out there and have success,’’ said wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

Mims and Adkins both were hurt in the fourth quarter against Dallas. Mims worked Wednesday on a side field while Adkins was not spotted during the portion open to the media.

Adkins is not expected to play against the Texans. To fill his void, the Broncos on Wednesday signed to the practice squad tight end Marcedes Lewis, who is 41 and a 20-year player.

The Broncos also listed safety P.J. Locke (neck) as limited in practice and linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quad) as a full participant. Greenlaw returned to practice after being suspended by the NFL for one game for going after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatening him following Denver’s 33-32 win over the New York Giants on Oct. 19.

Nix preparing for NFL’s top defense

The Texans are No. 1 in the NFL in both scoring and total defense. With that in mind, quarterback Bo Nix said the Broncos must be very efficient on offense.

“There’s definitely a little bit more that we have to bring,’’ Nix said. “We have to execute at a higher level. They’re not going to give us much, so we have to literally go out there and be aggressive and take the things that we’re going to be able to get.”

Nix threw four touchdown passes against the Cowboys, including a 24-yard toss to rookie Pat Bryant in final minute of the first half. It was the first touchdown of Bryant’s career, and Nix went to the end zone to retrieve the ball for him after he had let it go.

“I knew that was Pat’s first, so that was what I was thinking,’’ Nix said. “He dropped the ball, so I thought I could grab it for him. … I remember what it was like when I did mine for the first time. So it’s awesome when you see a guy score in the NFL for the first time.”

After Nix’s big game, he joined teammates Monday night for the team’s annual Halloween party. He dressed as Brad Pitt’s character Sonny Hayes from “F1: The Movie.”

“It’s good for team camaraderie, nice to get away from football,’’ Nix said of the party.

Ehlinger re-signed to practice squad

Third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger re-signed with the Broncos practice squad Wednesday, a day after being released from the 53-man roster.

The Denver Gazette reported Tuesday that Ehlinger would return to the practice squad. He has been going up and down all season between the practice squad and the 53-man roster.

Ehlinger has wanted to remain with the Broncos regardless of his roster status and is a vested veteran who doesn’t have to go through waivers. So there has been no risk of another team picking Ehlinger up when the Broncos look to move him from the active roster to the practice squad.
