One dead in shooting inside Elbert County Administration Building

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office is currently trying to identify an individual after a shooting incident inside the County Administration Building, 212 Comanche St. in Kiowa.

Approximately 9:25 a.m. on Wednesday, a shooting incident was reported, with the Sheriff confirming one person dead from an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

According to county sources, the individual has not yet been identified, and an investigation is ongoing.

The incident has closed all Elbert County Government offices.

Elbert County spokesperson Wendy Holmes confirmed in a statement to The Denver Gazette that offices will reopen for business during regular business hours tomorrow.

There is no threat to the community, official sources said.
