Teen dead, five injured after crash near Burlington Wednesday morning
A rear-end collision at an intersection just north of Burlington in eastern Colorado killed a 17-year-old boy and injured five others Wednesday morning.
The crash, which took place just after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, occurred at the intersection of U.S. 385 and Kit Carson County Road X when a 21-year-old female driver of a Jeep rear ended a Ford Focus that was waiting to make a left turn, sending both cars off the road and into a nearby field, Colorado State Patrol said in a news release.
The Ford was occupied by five male passengers; one, a 17-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene, CSP said. Two others, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old, were airlifted to Denver-area hospitals, one with critical injuries and another with serious injuries. Two more teenagers, one of whom was the Ford’s driver, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The Jeep’s driver also sustained minor-to-moderate injuries in the crash, and was taken to a local hospital before being released, CSP said. Authorities did not say whether they believe speed and/or alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash when asked Thursday morning.
The crash took place just a mile-and-a-half north of Burlington and officials closed the highway for several hours for the initial investigation, CSP said. The roadway was reopened at 4:41 p.m. Wednesday.
The CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
