WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey returns to Broncos after being plucked off Giants’ practice squad

ENGLEWOOD — A familiar face is returning to the Broncos.

The Broncos on Wednesday plucked wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey off the New York Giants’ practice squad. He returns to Denver after having played with the Broncos from 2023-24.

Humphrey, being familiar with Denver’s offense, could play as soon as Sunday against Kansas City at Empower Field at Mile High. With Trent Sherfield sitting out Wednesday’s practice at Broncos Park due to a toe injury, Humphrey could end up replacing him and being one of five active receivers.

“We know the player really well,’’ said Broncos coach Sean Payton. “One of his strengths is his football I.Q. He can play a lot of different spots, and I think it was we had that roster availability. So we’ll see how that plays out. … But you know exactly what you’re getting from him, and that’s a real good trait to have as a player.”

Humphrey caught 44 passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns in his two Broncos seasons. The seven-year veteran becomes reunited with Payton after also playing for him with New Orleans from 2019-21.

Humphrey caught four passes for 55 yards and no touchdowns in three Giants games this season. He played in Denver’s 33-32 win over the Giants on Oct. 19, having two targets without a reception.

“It was unusual seeing him on the opponent’s sideline a few weeks back, but we’re glad to have him back,’’ Payton said.

Humphrey’s agent James Gould told The Denver Gazette early this year his client was a candidate to also play some tight end if he re-signed as a free agent with the Broncos. But he ended up signing with the Giants in March.

It remains to be seen if Humphrey might get any work at tight end. Broncos tight end Lucas Krull is out until at least December following foot surgery and tight end Nate Adkins has missed the past two games due to a knee injury. Adkins did not practice Wednesday and also could miss the game against the Chiefs.

Healthy tight ends on the 53-man roster are starter Evan Engram and Adam Trautman. Marcedes Lewis, 41, is on the practice squad and two of his allowed three elevations have been used.

The Broncos had a spot open on the 53-man roster after they made a series of moves Tuesday, and it was earmarked for Humphrey. Denver on Tuesday waived wide receiver Michael Bandy before he was re-signed to the practice squad Wednesday after clearing waivers.

Bandy played in the past two games due to receiver-returner Marvin Mims Jr. being out with a concussion and was primarily used to return punts. Mims was a full participant in practice Wednesday and is in line to play against the Chiefs, so there no longer was an immediate need with Bandy.

Humphrey could be needed immediately against the Chiefs. He could join Courtland Sutton, Troy Franklin, Mims and Pat Bryant as an active receiver.

“I’m happy to have my dawg back,’’ Sutton said about Humphrey. “It’s going to be good to see him.”
