Arapahoe driver cited for six-year-old expired license plates
An Arapahoe County woman’s license plates expired so long ago, they’re practically vintage.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office gave a citation to a driver whose plates expired six years ago in 2019. That’s old enough to be first grader in elementary school.
“We’ve seen our fair share of expired tags over the years, but this one deserves a spot in the record books,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
Initially, a deputy saw the driver’s vehicle six months ago. The driver had stopped on the side of the road after running out of gas and the deputy helped. The deputy gave her a “friendly warning” about her expired registration and sent her on her way, the office said.
The same deputy saw the car near East Arapahoe Road and South University Boulevard with the same expired tags on Tuesday. This time, the deputy towed her vehicle and issued citations for expired registration and driving an unregistered car.
“Moral of the story: Check your tags and renew before a small problem becomes a costly one,” the sheriff’s office said.
Arapahoe County isn’t the only jurisdiction dealing with the issue.
The Denver Police Department announced targeted enforcement earlier this week, with officers cracking down on expired plates between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.
The initiative came in response to expressed community concern related to violations of this nature. This is set to be Denver Police Department’s fifth one-month enforcement period of this nature since July 2024.
