Some residents of the Boulder area looked up to see a fire burning on the hillside on November 18, accompanied by the smell of smoke lingering in the air.

Dubbed the Realization Fire, the blaze was burning on Flagstaff Mountain, off Chapman Road between Flagstaff Road and Boulder Canyon Drive. With smoke in the area first announced around 9:30 p.m., blaze reached about two acres before being contained. Despite its small size, an aspect of the fire that makes it particularly noteworthy is that it occurred in an area that’s popular among outdoor recreators – about a mile northwest of the First Flatiron.

Burning near Artist Point, the blaze was described as a slow-moving fire and didn’t prompt any evacuations. While the fire was announced to be 100 percent contained by 2:15 a.m. on November 19, Artist Point, Artist Point Road, and Boy Scout Trail are set to remain closed at least through Wednesday during mop-up and the process of making sure all hot spots are extinguished.

At last report, the cause of the wildfire was still undetermined.

It’s likely Boulder locals may draw a connection between this fire and concerns that have been expressed about a nearby overlook in recent months. Overnight access to Panorama Point was recently further limited amid safety concerns related to illegal activities and increased fire risk. Artist Point is another easily accessible spot in the same general area that gets visited throughout all hours of the day, with this blaze – at this point presumably human-caused given the lack of lightning in the area last night – potentially highlighting concerns related to risks of nighttime activity on Boulder trails.

It not unreasonable to wonder if this fire could have officials thinking about whether or not further limitations on overnight access in the area could be essential to safety. Panorama Point is located much closer to the city and about a mile east of Artist Point.
