NCAA Soccer: Portland advances past Denver 5-4 on PKs in second round

The University of Denver men’s soccer team’s upset bid fell short Sunday as the Pioneers lost 5-4 on penalty kicks to host Portland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Portland’s David Ajagbe scored the winner to send the Pilots, who will be a conference opponent in the West Coast Conference next season, to the third round, where they will face Grand Canyon. Denver also lost at Portland in the regular season.
The Pioneers fell to 1-6 all-time in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, including 0-3 in true road matches.
Denver’s Holger Olsson opened the scoring in the third minute, but Portland’s Joe Highfield answered in the 18th minute to tie the score 1-1 going into halftime.
Portland took the lead in the 64th minute with a goal from Diego Rosas, but the Pioneers’ Kyle McGowan answered in the 76th minute to tie the game at 2. It was McGowan’s second goal of the NCAA Tournament.
Denver goalkeeper Isaac Nehme played all 110 minutes and made three saves. Keegan Kelly had an assist for the Pioneers.
