Kicker Wil Lutz reacts to Broncos contract extension: ‘I want to finish my career here’
Kicker Wil Lutz enjoyed his bye week on the golf course when the Broncos made their intentions clear.
“Everything kind of came together pretty quick,” Lutz said.
The Broncos and Lutz agreed to a three-year extension on Friday, and he signed the deal on Monday. Lutz was headed toward free agency following this season. Now he’s under contract to play in Denver through the 2028 NFL season.
Contract specifics were unknown as of Monday. However, a source told The Denver Gazette that Lutz is in the top 10 for pay among NFL kickers. His salary cap hit this season is $5.54 million, per Spotrac.com.
Lutz — in his third year with the Broncos — reacted to the extension on Monday in a teleconference call with reporters. He identified team co-owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner, and the still under-construction team facility, for his excitement to play long-term for the Broncos. Lutz also said he has a “great relationship” with coach Sean Payton dating back to their time together with the Saints.
“(For) my family, it’s just been such a welcome change for us over the last three years,” Lutz said. “We’re just really excited to be a part of the future here (and) not just going to practice every day staring at that building, hoping that I get to be a part of it. It was never really a weight on my shoulders, but it’s taken care of, and we get to focus on winning football.”
Lutz is a 10th-year pro with a .859 lifetime field goal percentage. His 1,114 points scored since entering the NFL in 2016 are second-most in the NFL over that span. Lutz is 17 of 20 on field goal attempts this season with five-game winning kicks.
Lutz admitted a little surprise at the timing of his extension over the bye week. But Lutz said he told the front office in training camp: “Hey, I want to be here. I want to finish my career here.”
“I think it was mutual,” Lutz continued. “The whole process was fairly easy. We were all on the same page about where I stand in this building and that I want to be a part of this going forward.”
Payton said on Monday that Lutz “earned it” and explained how the extension came together. Payton and general manager George Paton also reached out to other players, too, who are approaching NFL free agency.
“The key is not affecting the mojo or how your team is doing. I’m always sensitive to that, especially when you’re playing well, because sometimes those can be difficult discussions,” Payton said. “We were able to get Wil done. There are a few other players that we know we’ve reached out to, and I think the key is the communication aspect of it all. (Lutz) has played well. He’s consistent, and I think he has the respect of the locker room. I think, like all kickers, there are ups and downs.
“But he’s been a great addition for us.”
Lutz has been especially clutch late in games this season. His method for staying calm and executing in tense situations?
Lutz explained how tuning out noise on the sideline is key — despite the confused reaction of some teammates.
“I kind of check myself out of the game as far as the ups and downs of it, when they score (and) when we score. I try to really just stay out of all of that to keep the heart rate low,” Lutz said. “It’s funny, Bo (Nix) was giving me a hard time. He’s seeing me on the cooler just sitting there and hardly smiling. He came up to me the other day, he’s like: ‘Man, you really don’t look like you’re having much fun.’ I’m like: ‘Man, I’m having a great time!’
“At the end of the day, I have to get ready to kick. I try not to get too involved in the emotions of a football game, and I think that’s helped me a lot over my 10-year career.”
