5 killed, including adult and children from Colorado Springs, in multi-vehicle Douglas County crash

A three-vehicle crash that began when one driver lost control killed five people, including three juveniles and seriously injured two juveniles, in Douglas County just south of Franktown on Monday evening.

A Toyota hatchback traveling southbound on Colorado 83 near Russellville Road went off the right shoulder for an unknown reason before rolling into the northbound lane, according to a news release by Colorado State Patrol.

CSP reported Tuesday morning that the Toyota hatchback (Toyota Matrix) was reported stolen through the Aurora Police Department on Monday at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The driver was thrown from the Toyota when it rolled, and was pronounced dead on the scene. The hatchback then hit a Ford sedan head-on that had an adult driver and five juveniles in it, the release stated.

CSP said Tuesday the driver of the Ford sedan (Fusion) was driven by a 35-year-old male from Colorado Springs. The passengers of the Fusion were identified as a 13-year-old female, an 8-year-old male, a 12-year-old female, a 12-year-old male and a 14-year-old male, all from Colorado Springs.

The driver and the front seat passenger, a 13-year-old female, were shown to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. The 13-year-old female and the 14-year-old male, sitting in the back seat of the vehicle, were airlifted to an area hospital for life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the sedan and three of the juveniles were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third vehicle, a Ford pickup, had been behind the Ford Fusion and had stopped just before the crash scene.  No damage was observed on the vehicle, and it was determined that the car was not involved.

Highway 83 was reopened at 11:50 p.m., Monday.
