Deion Sanders thankful to watch son Shedeur’s first NFL start amid tough season with CU Buffs

In a rare sight in the NFL, the dad of the visiting team’s quarterback shared a suite with the owner of the home team.

But when you learn the two parties involved are Deion Sanders and Mark Davis, it makes a lot more sense.

When the Colorado coach traveled to watch his son, Shedeur, make his first career NFL start with the Cleveland Browns last Sunday, he did so alongside Davis, the Las Vegas Raiders owner.

“How many times (has) that happened?” Sanders asked.

While that may be a first, what was certainly a first was Coach Prime watching his son play in person and not being on the sidelines for it. From youth football through his record-setting college career with the Buffaloes, Shedeur always had Deion coaching him, until this season with the Browns.

After opening the season as Cleveland’s fourth-string quarterback, Shedeur became the franchise’s first quarterback in three decades to win his first start with the team as the Browns took down the Raiders 24-10.

In the owner’s suite, a dad celebrated.

“I’ve never seen him play without me coaching him, so that was strange, but it was good and it was healthy because I was just in straight dad mode,” Deion said. “I wasn’t in coach mode. I loved that I was able to see him gain the first victory.”

Coach Prime was only disappointed he brought a loss with him from the night before as his CU team fell to 3-8 during a difficult 2025 season.

“I wanted to go see my son, but then, I don’t want to take a (loss) with me,” Sanders said. “I wanted two (wins) over the weekend, so that had me feeling a little funky. I don’t like that on me, man. You could be a loser or a guy who’s lost games. I would rather be a guy who lost games than a loser because I’m not a loser and that bothers me.”

For the second time in three seasons, CU is guaranteed to win four or fewer games under Sanders. A loss Saturday at Kansas State (10 a.m., FS1) would cement the worst record of the Coach Prime era. As Thanksgiving arrives, there’s only one thing he wants to be thankful for.

“I would be thankful for a win,” Sanders said. “This has been a tumultuous season in every realm possible. The Sanders family has been tried and tested in every way imaginable. Each and every kid, my mother, my family, me, but guess what? We’re still here — and we would never give up.

“We’re gonna keep on fighting. We’re gonna keep on loving. We’re gonna keep on being a blessing. We’re gonna keep on smiling and styling. We’re gonna keep on being who we’re called to be. I love life and I try my best to live the life I love and love the life I live, but I try my best to always be a blessing to someone else.”
