‘Tragic situation all around’: Families grieve following Douglas County crash

A week meant for family gathering turned into a time of grieving following a car crash that killed two adults and three children in Douglas County on Monday.

The Douglas County Coroner on Wednesday identified the victims in the crash as Alvin Corado, 35, Toretto Corado, 8, MaKenlee Corado, 11, and Jase Green, 12, all of Colorado Springs.

The other adult who died was a 31-year-old man from Denver. He was not identified by the coroner “at the family’s request.” The man is suspected of a carjacking in Aurora and the vehicle was involved in the crash that killed the four victims, authorities said.

Two victims are recovering, according to family members and hospital officials. Mia Corado, 13, is in “fair condition,” according to a Children’s Hospital spokesperson. Jordan Green, 14, is also in stable condition at an unnamed hospital, according to his uncle.

The families of the four victims have posted GoFundMe accounts.

The tragedy unfolded on Monday around 3:45 p.m., when the 31-year-old man carjacked a Toyota Matrix hatchback at the Nine Mile Station Regional Transportation District parking garage.

Less than an hour later, the man lost control of the car on Colorado 83 near Russellville Road south of Franktown, crashing into a Ford Fusion sedan head-on, authorities said. The sedan carried one adult driver and five children.

Alvin Corado, who was driving the sedan, and three of the children, died. The 31-year-old man was thrown from the car, authorities said.

The surviving children expect to make slow recoveries, according to the families.

Anthony Martin created a GoFundMe for his nephew, Jase Green, 12, who, he confirmed, died in Monday’s crash. Martin said his other nephew, Jordan Green, 14, is recovering in the hospital. The fundraiser generated more than $14,000 in less than a day.

“It’s just a tragic situation all around for all the families, including the guy that made a horrible decision to steal that vehicle and change the lives of everyone involved,” Martin told The Denver Gazette in a phone call.

“Instead of preparing for the holiday,” he said, “we’re just learning to cope, grieve and recover. The reality of it is our family is forever changed.”

Martin said Jordan is in the hospital with facial and pelvis fractures that require surgery.

“He’s dealing with his physical injuries, but also dealing with the emotional stress and injury of losing his best friend, his little brother,” Martin said. “So, it’s a lot. He lost his stepfather. He lost his stepbrother and sister.”

Jose Rodriguez also confirmed that his nephews Toretto Corado, Makenlee Corado, and their father Alvin Corado died in Monday’s crash.

“Toretto is 8, Mackenlee – we call her Mack – and then we have Mia, who’s 13. She’s the one here in the hospital right now,” Rodriguez told Gazette news partner KOAA in Colorado Springs.

“Biggest thing I can say is just ball of energy. They lit up the room when they came around,” Rodriguez said.

Mia suffered a fractured pelvis, lacerated ligament and a hole in her esophagus, according to Rodriguez.

“She’s recovering well. She’s stable, she’s responsive,” Rodriguez said.

The family learned of the crash through the app Life360, alerting them something was wrong. Marissa, the mother, rushed back home from out of town.

Their GoFundMe page has collected more than $67,000 in less than a day.

Martin, Jase and Jordan’s uncle, said “people should just come together and cherish their loved ones and hold on to them.”

The RTD declined The Denver Gazette’s request for video from the Nine Mile station, as well as the police report about the carjacking, calling it an “ongoing investigation.” The Aurora Police Department, which is handling the carjacking investigation, did not provide an update when asked Wednesday.

Colorado Springs Gazette’s news partner, KOAA News 5, contributed to this report.
