Hundreds of flights delayed out of Denver airport on busiest travel day

Hundreds of flights on Sunday were delayed at Denver International Airport amid freezing temperatures on what officials said was projected to be the busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving holiday season.

As of 12:45 p.m., 482 flights were delayed and six were canceled into or out of the Denver airport, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. On Saturday, delays impacted 593 flights, while 37 were canceled.

Airlines with the most delays included Southwest, United and SkyWest.

Airport officials said 96,000 passengers were expected to be screened at the Denver airport on Sunday, the peak of the Thanksgiving holiday travel surge.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport experienced 1,293 cancellations and 1,062 delays on Saturday after a major snowstorm hit the Midwest. Over 900 flights are delayed at O’Hare on Sunday, according to FlightAware. O’Hare offers dozens of flights to and from Denver daily.

On Saturday morning, Denver experienced 0.2 inches of snowfall, marking the Mile High City’s second latest first measurable snowfall on record.

9NEWS meteorologists said more snow is possible on Sunday evening.

Snow showers were expected to hit the Colorado mountains starting Sunday morning and last until early Monday, when 4-10 inches of snow was expected to blanket almost all ranges, according to 9NEWS meteorologists.

Front Range snowfall could provide the metro Denver area light snow accumulation between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday. Temperatures were expected to stay below 28 degrees, meaning snow accumulation could result in icy roads.
